Homemade Gingerbread Syrup
Forget store-bought syrups that don’t resemble gingerbread. This homemade version will have you pining for your childhood Christmas, sleigh rides, and decorating a house of gingerbread. Jazz up your holiday drinks with homemade gingerbread syrup full of winter spices. Perfect for making gingerbread lattes and Holiday espresso martinis!
Do not use ground spices as your syrup will end up muddy.
- Sugar – Demerara or brown sugar for a more pronounced caramel flavour.
- A little molasses
- Cinnamon sticks
- Freshly grated ginger – the more you add, the stronger the taste
- Peppercorns or allspice berries
- Whole cloves –careful a little equals a lot of flavour
- Orange peel – or orange essence – you can experiment with one or the other or both for a more pronounced flavour
- Water use equal amounts of water to sugar and molasses. You can easily double the recipe. If you want a thicker syrup, use less water.
Step 1. Put all the ingredients in a small saucepan and stir over medium-low heat to dissolve the sugar. Turn the heat off once the syrup has come to a simmer. Do not boil.
Step 2. Cover and leave the syrup to infuse until cool. Strain with a cheesecloth or mesh strainer into a clean jar or bottle. Keep in the fridge for up to two weeks. Apply a chalkboard label and a handwritten note to accompany a beautiful bag of Wood Buffalo Coffee and there you have a Holiday gift basket. Aren’t you creative!
